Following an illustrious three-year run with the Bismarck Bobcats of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) that spanned three Central Division titles and a Robertson Cup championship, Bryce Schmitt has capped off his junior hockey career by committing to play NCAA Division I hockey at Lake Superior State University.
The Minot Hockey Boosters are proud to announce the addition of Keith Martelle as the new Assistant Program Director. Keith was the programs Staff Coach last season. It will be an easy transition into his new role with our ever growing and changing program. Keith has been involved in our program since 1999 as a Board Member, Committee member, Coach and Parent. Keith will be a tremendous asset to our staff.
Any player in our program is eligible to compete. We are asking you to stickhandle 1200 minutes and shoot 5500 pucks between April 15 and September 10. There will not be a set amount you have to do each week. If you complete or exceed the required amount of stickhandling minutes and shots. Your name will be put into a drawing at the Pancake breakfast for a prize.
This program will be on your honor. If you complete this program you will improve your puck skills. Don’t forget to get to open hockey and public skating. You must turn in your completed forms by Monday September 10th. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to give me a call or email. Have a great summer.
Forms can be printed off the website or picked up in the MHB office.

During the past few months you have probably heard about a possible third rink at MAYSA. This letter is to inform you of what is happening toward installing a third sheet of ice. The rink expansion will be discussed during the Minot Hockey Booster annual meeting to be held on Tuesday, February 28th at 7:30 pm. Hopefully you will be able to attend this important meeting and view the drawings of the planned expansion.
The possibility of a third rink was brought up last winter and progress was moving forward in the spring of 2011, when the recent flood put the expansion on hold. In the fall of 2011, the All Seasons Arena lost its ice and all ice operations were moved to MAYSA. At this time the process of adding a rink at MAYSA was started again and the expansion committee hired and engineering/architect firm to continue with the project. The plan is to do the project in two phases. Phase I will start in April, 2012 on the existing East rink. Additional seating will be installed around the rink and an upper walk-way will be added that will go around the rink. This will expand seating for 1400 and the walk-way will accommodated standing room for another 400 to 500 people. All ice users will be at MAYSA next year and seating will be much better for the high school, university and junior team games.
Phase II will start after funding is secured which should happen in early 2013. Phase II includes adding a third rink east of the present rink. Included will be locker rooms, Trinity health room and concessions. There will be seating for 1400 and a walk-way above that will provide standing room for 400 to 500 people.
Upon completion, MAYSA will be a state of the art complex where all ice activities can take place. This is an exciting time for the Booster and MAYSA and to have all ice users in one facility will benefit everyone. If you have been to a high school, university or junior league game, you have noticed the fun atmosphere of a packed arena. It is also nice to see our young players watching the games before the walk to the west rink for practice. With all ice in one complex there is no need to drive across town for one child while the other child is at MAYSA. We also will be able to offer our out of town teams and parents the best in concessions and comfort.
To make this project work and completed we need the help of everyone. No task or act of help is too small. Once this is done we will all feel the pride or ownership, much as the parents did with the original MAYSA project 12 years ago.
There will be an MHB Alumni meeting Thursday, February 2nd at 6:30PM in the MYSA concessions meeting room. It is open to all current/past MHB parents, coaches, officials and past players.
We will be trying to identify what this group will do moving forward. In the past they have raised money for our program by working various events, tournaments, membership fees, and been in charge of nominations for the Minot Hockey Boosters Hall of Fame. All the money they have raised has went back to our program through equipment purchases and camp scholarships.
I would like to thank all the people who have been involved in the past and hope they will continue to help in the process.
Thank you, Jarrod

Dear USA Hockey-registered Coach,
It is an exciting time to be a part of USA Hockeys Coaching Education Program. Throughout the month of September we will launch our new online age-specific modules. These modules represent a revolutionary approach to help you become the best hockey coach possible. We are providing you with information specific to the age level of play you are coaching so you can reach your players where they are in their developmental process.
Each week in September will feature the launch of a new age level module, beginning with the 8 & Under Module on September 6th. The full schedule is as follows:
September 6th: 8 & Under (Mites)
September 13th: 10 & Under (Squirts)
September 20th: 12 & Under (Peewees)
September 27th: 14 & Under (Bantams), and 16/18/19 & Under (Midgets)
The modules feature presentations from USA Hockey and current and former National Team Development staff members, NHL and collegiate coaches, and subject-specific experts, i.e., nutritionists, psychologist, etc. Each age level consists of topics ranging from specific skill development (skating, passing, shooting, body contact, etc.) to goaltending to nutrition and sleep needs of players. All subjects and concepts will be conveyed using video presentations, drill examples, white board graphics, animation, etc.
Modules must be completed before December 31st of the current playing season. Once you register you have 30 days in which to complete the module. All modules started after December 1st still must be completed by December 31st. Please click here to find out more information on the modules and to register.
The new CEP requirements passed by USA Hockeys Board of Directors back in June 2010 require you to complete a module for each age level of play you are coaching. You can complete more than one module per season but can only be registered for one module at a time. The cost for each module is $10. You will also need your USA Hockey membership confirmation number in order to register for the modules. Please click here for information on retrieving that number.
USA Hockey recently made a rule change in regards to checking in PeeWee hockey. There will still be BODY CONTACT in PeeWee hockey. Please click here to read an article from David Hoff (Northern Plains District Coach in Chief). This will clarify the misconceptions of the proposal.
Another rule change that will impact NDAHA is Rule 630b Off-sides. This rule allows tag up off-sides for 14U Youth/Girls and above. Starting with this falls 2011/12 season 14U Girls, Bantam Boys, Jr Gold/High School Boys and 19U/High School Girls will all be playing under this delayed off-sides rule.
Also passed at this Congress was Rule 27b that permits state governing bodies to reduce minor penalties to 1 1/2 minutes for games played with periods up to fifteen minutes in length. Although many affiliates used 1 1/2 minute penalties in the past it wasnt legal to do so. Now NDAHA can allow associations to legally reduce penalties to 1 1/2 minutes. Well have this item on the agenda at the fall meeting. NDAHA should have a uniform policy for 1 1/2 and/or 2 minute penalties for 15 minute periods that all associations follow.
The fourth major rule change that was proposed and voted on at at the Annual Congress was Rule 78b that would no longer allow icing for the short handed team during a penalty. This rule was defeated. A team on the penalty kill will still be able to ice the puck.
Fall 5 on 5 will be starting up soon! See the online schedules for your age group for dates and times.
